Charles Freeman’s limited edition photographs synthesize the grandeur of French design, museum masterpieces, and forgotten histories into new visual spaces.

With a designer’s precision and a curator’s eye, he transforms midcentury architecture and classical elements into unexpected compositions—inviting the viewer to discover captivating layers of nuanced design framed with elegant precision.

Each signed Chromaluxe aluminum print offers a luminous window into this evolving dialogue between past and present.

Cadre Palais Royal, ParisCadre Palais Royal, ParisComposed from a mirrored quadrant of the Palais Royal’s neoclassical façade, this image reframes the architectural grandeur of 18th-century Paris into a new kind of viewing device. At its core, a precise alignment of cornices, windows, and sky creates a geometric “oculus,” surrounded by rhythmically repeated windowpanes.

Through this structure—ornate yet restrained—emerges an unexpected apparition: a single waterlily from Monet’s Nymphéas Bleus, suspended in the center. The effect is both formal and fluid, suggesting a conversation across centuries: from the ordered elegance of Enlightenment-era design to the immersive atmosphere of late Impressionism. The photograph becomes a frame for impossible connections—between architecture and painting, structure and dream.

TWA Connecting FlightsTWA Connecting FlightsAn homage to the mid-century golden age of flight, this image features the iconic Lockheed Constellation—fondly known as the “Connie.” This elegant propeller-driven airliner, introduced in 1943 and serving through the 1950s, is shown mirrored, creating a visual dialogue where movable stairs ferry passengers between “connecting flights”. Silvery engines gleam amid ethereal clouds, evoking the romance and promise of air travel’s heyday.

The aircraft rests forever near Eero Saarinen’s TWA Terminal at JFK Airport, completed in 1962, a masterpiece of futuristic design and modernist architecture. Though the Connie now rests permanently outside the TWA Terminal Five "Flight Center," this composition breathes new life into the grounded plane, soaring once again on the wings of imagination and history.

Originally sculpted in 1830 by Denis Foyatier for the Jardin des Tuileries, this larger-than-life Spartacus once stood defiant under open skies, breaking his chains in a gesture of unyielding resolve. Inspired by an ancient Greek sculpture attributed to Agesander of Rhodes, Foyatier’s figure carries forward the eternal spirit of resistance—muscles taut, gaze uplifted, a silent cry for freedom etched in stone.

Relocated in 1877 to the Louvre, he now stands within the hush of the museum’s galleries—his rebellion stilled, his marble form caught in a kind of beautiful suspension. Once a symbol of liberation in motion, he is now encircled by stillness. And though countless visitors pass by—perhaps gazing, perhaps admiring—the echo of captivity remains, quiet but unresolved.
